John

A health wake-up call can become a turning point.

I am John. I went from an ICU and a wheelchair to rebuilding my health, protecting my heart, and hiking the Rockies. I did not need more hype. I needed the right information, a system I could follow, and a reason behind every step. That is what I bring to MoJo now.

My story

I did not change my life all at once. I finally stopped running from it. If you are new to this page, here is the real version of the man behind the posts, not the polished one.

My struggle with health did not begin at 60. It began when I was a kid. I grew up overweight, I was bullied, and somewhere along the way food became comfort. I lost about 50 pounds in high school, but losing the weight did not erase the patterns underneath it.

As an adult, other things took hold. Tobacco, which I finally quit for good in 2005, and alcohol, which slowly became how I coped with stress and pressure. From the outside my life looked successful. I earned a master’s in mathematics, built a career in aerospace and technology, led teams, and ran my own consulting business. You can be doing well professionally while quietly losing ground personally.

Eventually my body started keeping score. My weight climbed, my A1C reached the prediabetic range, inflammation increased, and I had neuropathy, swelling, and less energy than I used to. It is easy to chalk that up to getting older.

Then life got my attention. By early 2025 I was near 200 pounds again, and while traveling in Costa Rica I shattered my right femur. Suddenly I was not hiking. I was in a wheelchair. On April 10, 2025 I began the food based metabolic health protocol Monica had already used to change her own life, and I stopped drinking. No grand proclamation, just a decision.

The engineer in me took over. I studied insulin resistance, glucose regulation, protein, fiber, intermittent fasting, sleep, and movement, learning from researchers and physicians like Dr. Ben Bikman, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Robert Lustig. For the first time, decades of struggles started to connect. I reduced highly processed foods, prioritized protein and fiber, added intermittent fasting, and became intentional about when and how I ate. I stopped looking for another diet and started building a lifestyle. Not perfection. Consistency.

Over the months that followed, the changes became measurable. I lost roughly 30 pounds, my A1C dropped from 5.7 to 5.3, my fasting insulin reached 3, my triglycerides reached 38, the swelling disappeared, my neuropathy improved, and alcohol left my life. The numbers were not the biggest victory. Freedom was. Freedom from negotiating with food, and freedom to think about what my body can do instead of only what it weighs.

Life tested me again. In February 2026 I had aortic valve replacement surgery and faced another recovery. A shattered femur, a wheelchair, cardiac surgery. Those experiences changed how I define health. Health is capacity. It is the strength to get back up when life knocks you down, and the ability to walk, hike, travel, think clearly, and take part in your own life.

Today, at 69, I am hiking Colorado trails again, rebuilding strength, and alcohol free. Somewhere along this road I was blessed to meet Monica. From addiction to alignment, from surviving to living, and now from our experiences to hopefully helping you.

I may be a good fit for you if

  • You had a health scare, or your labs finally got your attention.
  • You want the why, the mechanism, and a plan that makes sense.
  • You are dealing with stubborn weight, heart risk, or years of metabolic drift.
  • You are on or considering a GLP-1 and want to protect strength and build habits that last.
  • You are skeptical of health hype and want straight talk.

“The goal is more than weighing less. It is to be metabolically stronger, more capable, more mobile, better able to use glucose, and more prepared for the decades ahead.”

Muscle, movement, food, sleep, and consistency all belong in that conversation. I will respect your intelligence, explain the why, and keep the plan simple enough to live with. No hype, no gimmicks, just a framework you can use.

This is my own story. Medical decisions belong with you and your doctor, and results vary.
